World Water Day 2019

Friendly PSA: hug your water today. It’s World Water Day!

Water Is Everywhere

It’s sometimes hard to know where to stop when considering how much of our lives touch water. I started adding up every interaction I had with water today (and today is not even over), then quickly realized every moment of every day is touched by water. Where do we draw the line? That’s right, we can’t! Everything is water. Take this short list, for example. Any similarities in your day?

  • I brushed my teeth.
  • I used the toilet.
  • I drank water.
  • I had 2 coffees.
  • I drank green juice.
  • I ate a breakfast sandwich.
  • I ate rice & veggies for lunch.
  • I drank tea.
  • I wore clothing.
  • I used electronic devices.
  • I breathed.
  • I am a human.

Quote from Dr. Earle’s book, The World Is Blue: How Our Fate and the Ocean’s Are One

World Water Day, much like other environmental days, is not meant to be taken as a “on this day I will remember and every other day I will forget” holiday. Rather, it’s a reminder to check in with ourselves, our habits, and our interactions with this planet.

Leave No One Behind

The theme of this year’s World Water Day is “Water For All” and that is an appropriate reminder that while water is a necessity for life, it is not a given for everyone. This is a true crime, and one that really needs to be addressed, above all else. If we don’t have water, we don’t have anything. Water is life. Water is freedom. Water is opportunity.

Every day is World Water Day but on this day, pay special attention to the myriad ways you use water. I bet it’s more than you realize!

What is one act you can take today to remind yourself of water’s importance?
