A forest filled with the colours of autumn: larches and poplars turning different shades of yellow.

Falling in love with autumn’s iridescence

A recent walk in the autumn woods left me bowled over. Oh, my, Lanta, was it pretty.

Autumn is my favourite season. I love all the seasons, but there is something about the way plants change their garb each fall that dazzles me.

One thing I miss about where I used to live in New England, is the colour of autumn. There, it is all oranges and reds, with deciduous trees lighting up the hillsides come “leaf peeping” season. Here in BC, at least where I live now, are mostly coniferous forests. But where there is a lack of orange and red, the forest makes up for it in vibrant and endless shades of yellow. In fact, yellow ends up making a bold appearance with poplars and larches sending up beacons of colour amid a sea of green. And, actually, there are pops of orange and red, they’re just a different shade (and texture). It’s magnificent. Resplendent. Iridescent!

While the autumn colours are emboldened by brilliant blue skies, there is something to be said for an overcast day to really make the colours stand out. It’s almost as if we can appreciate the bold yellows more when the skies are grey. The trees become our sunshine. 🙂

After weeks with no rain, we finally received a soft drizzle that lingered over the day, which only further amplified the autumn rainbow. Moss comes alive in the rain and it’s truly magical.

Because I’m not posting on Instagram much these days, but because I still love to share photos, you get to be the receiver of this autumn awe. Enjoy!

  1. I love autumn, its perfume and the beauty of the landscapes with steel-stormy sky, while sun rays are hitting the yellow leaves… so pretty. Something romantic and almost spiritual about it. It’s also nice to bundle up in our favourite sweaters, with which we get reunited again after them being tucked away for months!
    Beautiful pictures Ryan!

    1. You’ve so eloquently described exactly how I feel about this season, Lucie! It is truly a marvellous time. And I too love being reunited with my sweaters!! 🙂
