What Does 50lbs of Luggage Look Like?

The world may never know. But this is what ~35lbs looks like!

I know what you’re thinking. “Ryan, you’re going away for 4 months! Surely you need more than that?”

It turns out, even this might be too much! Let’s review the facts: I’m going to Midway. A very small island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Where there will be at most 80 people living and working in sub-tropical conditions. Do I really need a sweatshirt or makeup? …nope.

Plus, this is a chance for me to live simply for a few months. To get away from the hubub of the technology-crazed, stuff-filled life. I’m not even bringing a computer, though that’s mostly because it weighs almost 5 pounds by itself. I want to feel lighter and less bogged down by the things I’m bringing, mostly because I want to have plenty of room for all the awesomeness that is about to be beset upon me.

To be honest, I’m kind of excited about the prospect of wearing the same 2 t-shirts for 4 months. Because really, who do I have to impress? Albatross chicks aren’t going to care if I’m dressed to the nines. 😉

Current local time is 6:43am which means it’s time to explore! Flying to Midway tonight, stay tuned!

Sometime in the not-too-distant past, I watched a clip from the documentary “Earthlings”. I never got to the whole movie, mostly because after watching the trailer, I had seen enough. I felt sick, disgusted, sad, angry, light-headed… it was pretty bad. I’m by no means a fanatic, but it’s hard not to get upset when…

That’s where I lived on Midway. Say whaaaaat?! Yeah! I kid you not. The side with the random blue boogie board was home to all of Midway’s eager volunteers and we loved that place oh-so-much. Thanks to the power of Google, now you guys can see the island…

  • It’s Not About Litter

I’ve been mulling over how to approach this blog post for about a week now. Why? Because, quite frankly, I haven’t been sure of what to say. This post, to nobody’s surprise, is about plastic. I talk about plastic all the time though, and a lot of people already know about the plastic pollution problem…
