The sights and succulents of San Pedro (and points beyond)
Hello, to all who read these here stories!
Two quick things:
- I am experimenting with how I deliver these notes to you. Emails may look different for a bit! In fact, if you received this post by email, it did not include the photos. Thanks for hanging with me as we go for a little adventure.
- I am also trying to publish more light-hearted, fun posts (like this one!), with an interesting tidbit to chew on at the end, because we all like snacks, right?
I always do this thing, I’m sure you can relate: I go on a trip, take a bajillion photos, and they get stuck on my phone, hogging space and seen by no one (not even by me: I take ’em and I hoard ’em, how embarrassing). Not that the point of my photos is to have them be seen, but, you know, I kinda want to share them?!
Why is this? Is it that I grew up in a weird time, pre- and in-situ-Internet? Growing up, we had film cameras, later disposable, and later still, we flipped to digital, and then the advent of the smartphone was upon us (what a ride). Should I blame social media? At one time, every photo I took ended up in a very long Facebook album and there it languished. Or maybe it’s the damn phones? It’s probably always the damn phones.
Maybe it’s all of the above. Maybe I’m lazy. Whatever. The point is, I’m tired of gatekeeping my own photos. I’d like for you to enjoy them, too.
So0o0o0o…without further ado, I present: the sights and succulents of San Pedro and points beyond, a mish-mash of things I took note of while in LA back in January. Locations include: Wilmington, San Pedro, and several beaches: Cabrillo, Long, and Venice. (Oh, and the obligatory plastic bottle cap and toys left there, because…humans.)
It’s honestly mostly plants. Some views. Birds, obvi. A small montage of stickered water bottles left in the break room from volunteers and staff at IBR, along with a few cheeky magnets on the break room fridge.
…and apparently, I seemed partial to strongly worded signs and stickers telling ICE and fascism to take a hike! 🙊
Did you have a favourite?
PS – did you know there’s a term for wandering around a place and taking in the sights? It’s called flâneur. I first learned the term while interviewing a most lovely human, Sogol. It’s a delightful word. Let’s all try it on: flah-nurr. 🥖
